George Odera Outa of
the University of Nairobi, Kenya developed a community education
project to combat the environmental hazards that are choking Lake
Victoria, the world's second largest fresh water lake, and threatening
the livelihoods and health of the four million people who live around
it. Since winning the Prize, George has launched his project in the
main Lake Victoria town of Kisumu as part of its centenary festival.
Runners-up were Kapil Mohan, a civil servant
from Mangalore, India, and Juliet Jenkins, an
environmental designer from West Sussex, England who each received
$5,000.
Kapil's project solved an environmental problem by making tiles
and bricks from iron ore waste rather than clay. Juliet's proposal
aimed to show that large areas of agricultural land in southern
England could be more effectively developed as natural 'working
wetlands' - an economic and environmentally-sound alternative to
conventional artificial drainage.
