2004 Winners and Finalists

At the age of 25, British student Conrad Feather won the 2004 St Andrews Prize for the Environment for his conservation work with a remote tribe in the Amazon rainforest.

Conrad Feather has been working for four years with the Nahua people of Peru. Feather's project has enabled the Nahua to map and signpost their territory using the latest GPS, photographic, radio and video equipment. The project is based on active involvement and participation with the local community, local NGOs and forestry authorities and will provide an essential basis for any future sustainable management or development plans in the area.

The 2004 runners-up were Writhlington School for an ex-situ orchid conservation project, and Dr Mario Mallinconico of Italy for his work in developing sprayable natural polymers to replace the use of plastic in protected cultivation methods.

The orchid project provides a model for how different communities can work together to solve specific conservation issues. While the polymer project could make a breakthrough in dealing with the issue of plastics used in farming practices
